(TNND) — Two people were found dead in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue flight from New York City after it landed in Florida, according to a statement issued by the airline on Tuesday.
The bodies were discovered Monday night during a routine maintenance assessment of the plane, the airline said. According to flight tracker data, JetBlue Flight 1801 departed John F. Kennedy Airport in New York at 7:49 p.m. Monday and landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 11:10 p.m.
The circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation,” JetBlue said. "This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred.
Emergency responders pronounced the two individuals dead at the scene, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. The circumstances of how they accessed the compartment and how long they had been inside are uncertain.
Broward Sheriff crime and homicide detectives in Florida are continuing to investigate the incident and the county’s Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies on the bodies.
Landing gear compartments, which are located under the aircraft’s wings and at the front of the plane, have historically been used by people attempting to travel unnoticed on airplanes. The compartments open and close upon takeoff and landing to release wheels as well as other landing pieces, The New York Times reports.
The outlet reports that people who attempt to sneak into these compartments risk being crushed by the landing gear, falling to their death from openings, or dying from severe temperatures, pressure changes, lack of oxygen and hypothermia.
This incident is the latest in a string of occurrences that have raised concerns over airport security. On Christmas Day, a body was found in the wheel of a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Hawaii. It is unknown how the individual was able to get onto the ramp and access the wheel.
The investigation to determine the identities of the two people discovered in Fort Lauderdale and how they accessed the compartment before the plane department from New York is ongoing, Jet Blue said.
