WASHINGTON (TNND) — Wisconsin voters handed the GOP a win and a loss on Tuesday.

The liberal candidate, Susan Crawford won the contentious election for a seat on the state's supreme court. But voters also passed a GOP-backed measure to enshrine voter ID laws into the state constitution, making it much more difficult to change the existing state law should Democrats return to power in the state legislature.

Republicans celebrated the moment. Ashley Davis, a former George W. Bush White House official, called it the "biggest win of the night," adding, "Voter ID is going to be really important in regard to everything, moving forward."

Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to express his support for the amendment, writing, "Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT," and adding, "IT SHOULD ALLOW US TO WIN WISCONSIN FOR MANY YEARS TO COME."

Conservatives have been advocating for stricter voter ID laws amid ongoing debates about election integrity. Currently, 36 states have laws requiring identification at the polls. Critics argue that these laws unnecessarily complicate voting, as voter fraud is rare and not widespread enough to impact election outcomes.

Meanwhile, President Trump issued an executive order last week requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote.

Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Law School said in an interview, "My first reaction is that’s not a power he has. On this issue of federal elections, the president has very little power elections are run by the states. Congress gets to intervene from time to time so on a very few select areas."

Top Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and the Democratic National Committee, have filed a lawsuit attempting to block the order.

Wisconsin's voter ID law is already among the strictest in the country, with exceptions for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Those without an ID are offered a provisional ballot.
