Description

BOCA RATON, Fla. (WPEC) — A man is accused of leaving his roommate's dog lying on the ground, whimpering and bleeding, at a home in Boca Raton.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) said 34-year-old Gabriel Martinez was arrested for aggravated animal cruelty after allegedly assaulting a four-year-old pit bull named Gypsy with a metal trailer hitch, leaving the dog with severe injuries.

The investigation began when the dog's owner told PBSO that he returned home on March 29, to find his beloved dog whimpering and bleeding on the ground. Surveillance video revealed that Martinez had repeatedly struck the dog with the trailer hitch, according to the arrest affidavit.

The arresting deputy reported that Martinez cornered the dog against one of the fences in the home and "smashes Gypsy with the trailer hitch several times." The PBSO deputy said the trailer hitch was determined to be metal due to the sound it made after Martinez struck the helpless dog.

According to the PBSO arrest report, Martinez was heard shouting profanities and threats at the pit bull.

"Once I get you you're dead," Martinez was heard saying.

He allegedly also stated, "You f****** b****. You are going to get put down."

After the extensive abuse, the arrest report stated that Gypsy collapsed to the ground. The time stamp on the video detailed that Martinez "beat and tortured Gypsty for four minutes and 18 seconds."

The sheriff's office said Gypsy was rushed to Animal Care and Control (ACC) for medical attention. The veterinarian who was caring for Gypsy said the dog suffered a series of severe injuries, including: a broken paw, multiple limb fractures, bone contusions, and abdominal bruising. Medical tests confirmed that these injuries resulted from acute blunt force trauma.

The veterinarian told PBSO that the dog was in substantial pain and suffering, and she faces long-term health issues, potentially including the loss of her injured limb.

Following treatment, Gypsy was placed on pain management medication and is currently recuperating at home. The trailer hitch was seized as evidence, and Martinez was arrested for aggravated animal cruelty, according to PBSO.
