CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. (TNND) — A North Carolina woman has been arrested in connection to the disappearance and murder of her retired Green Beret husband, according to authorities.
Shana Cloud, 50, was charged Friday with first-degree murder and concealment of a death following a two-month investigation into the disappearance of her husband, 50-year-old Clinton "Clint" Bonnell, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office reported.
The investigation into Bonnell's disappearance began on Jan. 28 when the sheriff's office received a call from an employee at Methodist University requesting a well-being check in Fayetteville. Bonnell was studying at the college to become a physician assistant.
Deputies said that when they arrived, Shana Cloud told them she had not seen her husband since the day before. His vehicle, school book bag and other items were found at the home.
Later that evening, a friend of Bonnell requested another well-being check at the home, resulting in him being reported as a missing person, the sheriff's office said.
On Feb. 1, detectives from the homicide unit traveled to Virginia with assistance from Virginia State Police and executed a search warrant on Cloud's vehicle, rental property and cell phone before relevant evidence was transported back to Cumberland County.
"During the month of February, multiple search warrants were obtained and executed for digital data, to include but not limited to: cell phone records, video footage, digital devices, etc," deputies said. "The data collected was analyzed and used to develop a timeline of events not only surrounding Bonnell’s disappearance, but his whereabouts prior to his disappearance."
Deputies said they received a phone call on Feb. 25 about human remains found in a body of water, and based on the condition, they were not immediately identified.
DNA from the unidentified remains were sent to the North Carolina State Crime Lab to obtain a profile before being sent to the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) to be compared with Bonnells DNA on file.
AFMES determined the DNA collected was Bonnell's on March 28, and his next-of-kin was notified, authorities said.
Cloud was arrested at her home without incident and booked into Cumberland County Detention Center with no bond.
"Our hearts go out to the Bonnell family, the Special Forces community, and the Methodist University Physician’s Assistant Program during this difficult time," the sheriff's office said. "We ask that the public be respectful of their privacy and mindful of the comments made on social media. Out of respect for Bonnell and the integrity of this ongoing investigation, no additional details will be released at this time."
