Description

(TNND) — A new poll from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows former President Donald Trump up on Vice President Kamala Harris 47% to 43% in the battleground state of Georgia.

Notably, Trump’s lead in that poll was outside the margin of error, giving the result more weight.

Still, 8% in the poll were undecided, which one expert said could easily swing Georgia back into toss-up status.

Oklahoma State University politics professor Seth McKee said it’s “hard to fathom” a voter isn’t set in their opinion of Trump, whose been front and center in American politics for about a decade now.

Anyone who is undecided is probably unsure if they’re going to vote for Harris or just stay home on Election Day, McKee said.

Georgia, which has 16 electoral votes, is among just seven true toss-up states, including Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

President Joe Biden barely beat Trump in Georgia in 2020. There were just 11,779 votes separating the two, with Georgia decided by the election’s closest percentage margin.

Georgia should be extremely close this time, too.

Polls consistently show that Trump has an advantage over Harris in Georgia, but McKee still thinks that either candidate can win.

Georgia is a swing state with “nuance,” McKee said.

“It's a swing state, battleground state, yet it leans Republican,” he said. “I don't know if that's contradictory or not.”

The new poll found about three-quarters of Black voters in Georgia are siding with Harris.

McKee said that’s a concern for Harris.

A seemingly robust three-quarters majority of Black voter support might not be enough to propel Harris to victory when considering that Democratic presidential candidates on a national scale have normally gotten about 90% support from Black voters.

Georgia is one of the most geographically polarized states in America, McKee said.

Rural whites in Georgia are “some of the most Republican voters in America, bar none,” he said.

About 80% of rural white voters will likely support Trump, which means Harris will need strong showings from Black voters and voters in growth areas and more urban parts of the state.

“There's kind of a rule in southern politics that you got to get about 30% of the white vote, and you've got to clean house with the Black vote. We're talking close to 90/10 (percent). If you can do that, a Democrat wins. But even getting to 30% of the white vote for a Democrat is a tough road in southern states,” McKee said.

That’s part of why the northern “blue wall” states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are so important to the Harris campaign, because McKee said it’s easier to get white rural voters to go with Democrats there.

McKee said that neither side needs Georgia to win this election.

“But if you don't get Georgia, what about North Carolina?” he said.

There’s a tremendous correlation in voting habits between the neighboring states, he said.

But McKee said it’s not a given that Georgia and North Carolina will fall into the same column on Election Day. And there are multiple routes for either candidate to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

Trump’s side disputed the 2020 election results in Georgia, and there’s already been controversy in the state this election with a dispute over counting ballots by hand.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger assured voters this weekend on CBS’ "Face the Nation” that votes will be counted quickly and securely in his state.

Raffensperger said he expects three-quarters of all the vote totals will be reported no later than 8 p.m. on election night.

“What we will be waiting for is the overseas ballots that come in no later than Friday, and so those will then be the final numbers,” Raffensperger said during the CBS interview. “And we'll just see if that makes the difference in the total vote totals. I understand we're very competitive, and that's why we've done everything since day one to make sure we have fast, accurate and secure elections for all my voters here in Georgia.”

Raffensperger is a Republican, as is Gov. Brian Kemp.

McKee said both will be “honest brokers” for the election.

“It's pretty clear that the adults in the GOP, Raffensperger, Kemp, I don't think they care whether or not Trump wins,” McKee said. “They're going to make sure there's an honest election, just as they did in 2020.”
