Description

GEORGIA. (WALB) - February is National Cancer Prevention Month. Taking control of your health is important, as it can reduce the risk of developing the disease.

As many may know, cancer is a group of diseases caused by a rapid increase in cell growth.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that in 2025, there were roughly 2 million people who were diagnosed with cancer, with 66,210 new cases of cancer in Georgia. Colon, lung, prostate, pancreatic, and breast cancers are known to be the leading death-related cancers in the state, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Preventative measures

Officials with the ACS reveal that there is no legitimate way to prevent cancer, although staying healthy can lower the risk. Some best practices are:

  • Avoiding tobacco
  • Eat healthy and stay active
  • Stay safe in the sun
  • Protect against Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Mental impact

Cancer not only affects your physical health, but also your mental health. Reports from the National Institute of Health show that around 30% of cancer patients experience anxiety, depression, and PTSD. A diagnosis could also trigger fear and grief.

Managing mental health

Living with cancer means learning to navigate not just the disease itself, but the anxiety, fear, and grief that often accompany it—and discovering that protecting your mental health is an act of survival too. ACS offers some ways to cope with your emotions:

  • Express your feelings
  • Don’t blame yourself
  • Be active as possible
  • Find hobbies

Cancer Prevention Month reminds people that while you can’t control everything, the choices you make today—from healthy habits to regular screenings—are powerful tools in your hands to shape a healthier tomorrow.
