ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - An Albany police officer waiting for a kidney transplant was honored Saturday with a charity motorcycle ride organized by local bike clubs.

Officer Quas’Jon Flowers is battling stage five kidney failure. He has transitioned from a patrol role to a desk position with the Albany Police Department while he awaits a new kidney.

“I want to say it’s amazing,” Flowers said. “As a police officer, I’m used to helping other people. And in this moment, I think it’s amazing to have all these people come forward to help me. You know, it’s not something I expected. And it’s amazing seeing the community rally together like this. I love it. And I want to express a big thank you to everyone that came out and chose to ride for me today.”

Marvin Thomas, president of the Viper Unit Motorcycle Club, said he organized the event after seeing a report about Flowers on WALB News 10.

“Where it came about was watching WALB News 10,” Thomas said. “We saw the local police officer had some health issues, and so we got together with a group of us, our club and some other clubs, and we decided to do a charity ride to show a great charity gesture for the young man that’s going through these health issues.”

Marvin Thomas Jr., vice president of the Viper Unit Motorcycle Club, said the turnout reflected broad community support.

“It makes us feel good that we come together as a whole in the community amongst the Albany, Georgia area,” Thomas Jr. said. “We have multiple people, not just motorcycles, car enthusiasts. Just support from everywhere.”

The charity ride raised over $1,000 for Flowers to help support him during his health battle.
