NEW YORK (TNND) — Democratic New York Mayor Eric Adams appears to be eager to work with the incoming Trump administration after meeting with border czar Tom Homan.

Adams said he and Homan's conversation was to figure out how to go after illegal immigrants who repeat committing crimes in New York City.

Homan was tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to oversee the southern and northern borders and be responsible for deportation efforts once Trump returns to the White House.

During the mayor's news conference Thursday, he noted that he and Homan have the same goals while he insisted that the city's safety is his number one priority. Adams did not disclose additional details or future plans as his legal team looks into what could be done.

His goal is the same goal I have. We cannot allow dangerous individuals to commit repeated violent acts of violence in our cities across America," Adams said. "Safety means everything to me. 500,000 children. We don't know where they are right now in this country.

Adams made it clear that the Big Apple will not be a Safe Haven for individuals who commit violent crimes, which includes undocumented and documented immigrants.

The meeting marked Adams' step toward collaborating with the Trump administration.

Adams' recent comments on immigration follow frustration with the Biden Administration over its immigration policies and a surge of international migrants in the city.

He has maintained that his positions have not changed and argues he is trying to protect New Yorkers.

During the news conference, the mayor was asked if New York City would remain a sanctuary city.

New York remaining a sanctuary city is determined by the City Council," Adams said. "I'm going to try to attempt to use my executive orders to go after dangerous people who are committing violent acts against migrants and asylum seekers and long-term New Yorkers and undocumented immigrants.

New York offers social services like healthcare and emergency shelter to low-income residents, including those in the country illegally. City and state grants also provide significant access to lawyers, which is not guaranteed in the immigration court as they are in the criminal court.

In other parts of the country, Republican governors and lawmakers have already rolled out proposals that could help Trump carry out his pledge to deport millions of people living in the U.S. illegally.
