ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - City leaders said they’re turning their attention to making the roads of Albany safer.

Right now, commissioners are considering a plan to add 16 new traffic lights to the downtown area. These lights would cost $261,000, which is more than originally proposed, but would bring Albany up to date on ADA standards and pedestrian capabilities.

“The traffic signals in the downtown part of Albany are 50 years old, right up. When you see mass light poles with rust on them, you know they’re getting pretty old,” Ken Breedlove, Albany Traffic Engineering Manager.

The city is also considering placing 60 speed signs on the city’s busiest roads.

“Albany is a big part of a lot of traffic coming in and out. We just want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to bring about traffic awareness.”

Ten speed signs will go in each ward and will actively warn drivers about their speeds. The devices would cost over 500,000 dollars and be paid for by the Red Speed Camera fund, but Persley wants to assure drivers these are not devices that will issue citations.

“We won’t be sending out citations by these signs. We’re not spying on anyone but what we’re doing is, we’re just making people aware when you pass these signs and it flashes your speed, that’s the speed you were recorded going so if you need to, slow down,” he said.

City leaders will vote on the traffic system at the next regular meeting on Feb. 25.
