LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A North Las Vegas police officer and a suspect were both killed in a shootout Tuesday afternoon after the suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at a citizen.
Officers from the North Las Vegas Police Department responded to the area of Camino Al Norte and Lone Mountain Road around 2:13 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, who ignored their commands and fled.
An officer later located the armed suspect and ordered him to show his hands.
The suspect ignored the commands and approached the officer, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The officer was struck multiple times but managed to return fire, hitting the suspect.
NLVPD officers provided medical aid until North Las Vegas Fire Department personnel arrived.
The officer was transported to UMC Trauma Center in critical condition, where he later died despite medical efforts.
"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of one of North Las Vegas’ finest," said Chief of Police Jacqueline Gravatt. "Police officers choose this line of work because they want to protect and serve the community, knowing the risks and challenges that come with the badge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, friends, and his brotherhood in blue."
The suspect was also taken to UMC Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead.
This incident marks the first officer-involved shooting for the North Las Vegas Police Department in 2025.
The coroner's office hasn't revealed the officers involved at this time.
