ARLINGTON, Va . (WJLA) — A registered sex offender who was charged with exposing himself in a girls’ locker room was linked to additional incidents.
The Arlington Police Chief told WJLA on Tuesday that 58-year-old Richard Cox was recently caught in a girls’ locker room at Washington Liberty High School during community pool hours.
WJLA was the first to report that Cox entered the girls' locker room after he identified himself as transgender, according to witnesses who called police.
Police Chief Charles Penn said Cox visited the Wakefield High School swimming pool and Arlington County’s Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center late last year.
Police were dispatched to Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center at 4200 S. Four Mile Run Drive around 5:44 p.m. on December 6, 2024, following a report of trespassing.
Officers took Cox. of no fixed address, into custody after confirming his status as a registered sex offender, police said. Cox was charged with two counts of sex offender loiter near school/day care/park/playground and identity theft after providing false identifying information to officers.
Detectives determined that Cox had entered the facility on November 30, 2024, leading to an additional charge of sex offender loiter near school/day care/park/playground. Further investigation revealed that Cox exposed himself in the women's locker room on December 2, 2024, in the presence of an adult and two children. He was also charged with Indecent exposure and two counts of indecent liberties with children.
The investigation also uncovered additional crimes at Wakefield High School's swimming pool and women's locker room at 1325 S. Dinwiddie Street in October and November 2024. Cox faces charges of indecent exposure (x2), sex offender on school or day care property (x2), and five counts of sex offender loiter near school/day care/park/playground related to these incidents.
Cox remains held in the Arlington County Detention Facility Center as the investigation continues.
