WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Wednesday aimed at barring transgender female athletes from competing in women's or girls' sports.
During his first day in office last month, Trump signed an order calling for the federal government to define sex as only male or female and for it to be reflected on official documents such as passports.
The gender policy will define them based on whether people are born with sperm or eggs, combatting what Trump said was an effort to “socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life."
Wednesday's order — which coincides with National Girls and Women in Sports Day — will involve how his administration will interpret Title IX, the law best known for its role in pursuing gender equity in athletics and preventing sexual harassment on campuses.
When Title IX was first issued in 2020 under Trump's first presidency, it narrowed the definition of sexual harassment and required colleges to investigate claims only if they were reported to certain officials.
The Biden administration rolled back that policy last April with one of its own that stipulated the rights of LGBTQ+ students would be protected by federal law and provided new safeguards for victims of campus sexual assault. The policy stopped short of explicitly addressing transgender athletes.
Now, the Trump administration will enforce Title IX protections in schools based on biological sex.
Last week, the president signed an executive order aimed at cutting federal support for gender transitions for people under age 19.
"It is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called 'transition' of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures," Trump said in a statement.
