Description

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - A convicted felon with active arrest warrants in Tift County was arrested and charged by the Valdosta Police.

According to a release, at around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, VPD officers and detectives were looking for a person of interest in Ora Lee West, in the 600 block of East Ann Street. The person of interest was suspected of discharging a firearm in the area on several occasions.

VPD used surveillance videos to identify the person of interest as Zabian Andre Bellamy, 43. He is confirmed to have active arrest warrants through the Tift County Sheriff’s Office, which was unrelated to the case.

The release said that officers saw Bellamy riding on a motor scooter and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. He refused to pull over and tried to flee from the traffic stop.

Officers and detectives pursued him. During the pursuit, the lead officer saw a firearm on Bellamy’s hip. The pursuit lasted until he wrecked in a parking lot in the 700 block of North Ashley Street.

When officers attempted to arrest him, Bellamy refused to cooperate with verbal commands and physically resisted arrest. He was then arrested without further incident after a brief struggle with officers, according to a release.

VPD detectives seized a handgun, a shotgun, which had been reported stolen, and a quantity of Alpha-PVP and cocaine.

He is being held at the Lowndes County Jail on the following charges:

  • Two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon-felony
  • Two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony-felony
  • Theft by receiving stolen property-felony
  • Possession of Alpha-PVP with the intent to distribute-felony
  • Possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute-felony
  • Obstruction of an officer-misdemeanor
  • Fleeing and attempting to elude-misdemeanor
  • Numerous traffic violations
  • Active arrest warrants from Tift County

Detectives are still investigating the discharging of firearm cases. Further charges are forthcoming, according to police.

“This was incredible teamwork between our officers and detectives. This offender’s actions put our officers and our citizens at risk, but because of the persistence of our staff, he was taken into custody without anyone getting injured,” said Chief Leslie Manahan.
