WEST VIRGINIA (WCHS) — A lot of snow can lead to a lot of shoveling, and doing so safely can prevent not only back injuries but also heart attacks.

The National Weather Service recommends the following tips for shoveling heavy, wet snow:

  • Dress warmly - Make sure to cover your head, fingers and toes
  • Stay hydrated - Avoid heavy meals right before or after shoveling
  • Move only small amounts of snow - Don’t try to lift too heavy of a load with one pass of the shovel
  • Take frequent breaks - Stop shoveling entirely if you feel exhausted

Most of the region saw a minimum of about four inches of snow Sunday evening into Monday.
