Valdosta State University to ‘reduce operations’ starting Wednesday due to recent network outage

Description

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) - Operations will be reduced beginning Wednesday at Valdosta State University as the university works to restore the network and all of the university’s systems to campus following a cybersecurity issue that unfolded last month, according to the university.

Classes are still expected to begin Monday, Jan. 13, VSU announced in a social media to Facebook Tuesday.

Online classes are not experiencing any changes, according to the university. However, the university said face-to-face classes will need to be somewhat modified due to technology not being available in all classrooms at this time.

At this time, VSU said all campus computers and workstations, including faculty, staff, and student employees’ office computers, computer labs, and classroom computers, remain unavailable until further notice

Due to the network outage, VSU said its police phone lines are also down. For emergencies, call 229-561-0213 or 911.

The reduced operations comes after an incident involving the university’s cybersecurity nearly two weeks ago. According to the university, VSU’s Cybersecurity team became aware of a network intrusion on Dec. 28.

The team then initiated containment protocols to mitigate the issue, which the university said included isolating the campus from the internet. That then caused VSU’s network, internet, wifi and all of its systems to shut down, per the university.

Since then, the university said its IT and Cybersecurity teams, along with the University System of Georgia cybersecurity team and an independent security firm, have been working continuously to thoroughly scan the network, servers and workstations to ensure any damage is found and fixed.

“The team remains focused on ensuring your information is secure and services are fully operational. Analysis continues regarding evidence of sensitive data exposure,” the university said. “The restoration of campus information systems will continue in a systematic manner until all systems are back online. Updates will be provided as progress continues.”

As the cybersecurity teams and IT work to resolve the issue, VSU said employees who can work may be asked to do so either on campus or remotely, following specific instructions from VSU IT. Additionally, employees unable to perform their duties due to VSU’s network outage will continue to be paid campus closure hours, the university said.
