Description

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Thousands of people are congregating in metro Atlanta on Saturday for the latest “No Kings” protest against President Donald Trump’s administration.

Dozens of rallies are planned in north Georgia, according to the group’s website, ranging from the heart of Atlanta to cities like LaGrange and Athens. Nationwide, more than 9 million are expected to attend more than 3,100 events across all 50 states.

“Masked secret police terrorizing our communities. An illegal, catastrophic war putting us in danger and driving up our costs. Attacks on our freedom of speech, our civil rights, our freedom to vote. Costs pushing families to the brink,” the group said in an online statement. “Trump wants to rule over us as a tyrant. But this is America, and power belongs to the people — not to wannabe kings or their billionaire cronies.”

Outside the Georgia State Capitol in Downtown Atlanta, a large group of people had already gathered by 11 a.m., holding signs with slogans like “Stop the war on Iran!” and “Dump Trump.”

On Thursday, Atlanta police said more officers will be outside to enhance security.

“Atlanta has a deep and rich history of public demonstration as a force for positive change, and this event will continue that legacy,” the department said in a statement. “... Atlanta Police Department asks all participants to exercise their rights responsibly by remaining peaceful and complying with all applicable laws and lawful orders.”
