Description

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the man suspected of driving into crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens more, has several ties to the State of Georgia.

DeKalb County court records show that Jabbar married a woman in Georgia in September 2013. Jabbar filed for divorce from the woman in May 2016, saying that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.” Their divorce was finalized in August 2016.

We attempted to contact Jabbar’s ex-wife but have not been able to reach her for comment.

WTOC’s sister station Atlanta New First has also confirmed with Georgia State University that Jabbar attended the school from 2015 to 2017. He graduated with a B.B.A in computer information systems.

The FBI says that Jabbar was a U.S. citizen, originally from Texas, as well as an Army veteran.

Jabbar drove into crowds in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day in New Orleans in a pickup truck. The FBI says after he hit the crowd, he got out of the truck and began shooting at law enforcement officers. They returned fire, and Jabbar was killed at the scene.

The attack came the day the Sugar Bowl, a college football quarterfinal game, was scheduled to be played between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame. The game has been postponed to Thursday, officials announced in a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

A University of Georgia student was critically injured in the attack, the school’s president announced on social media. None of the identities of the victims, living or dead, have been released by law enforcement.

This is a developing story. Stick with WTOC for the latest updates.
