ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The suspect accused of plowing a vehicle into crowds at New Orleans’ French Quarter on New Year’s Day went to Georgia State University, according to the school.
Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, attended from 2015 to 2017 and graduated with a B.B.A. in computer information systems, the university said. The FBI confirmed that Jabbar is a U.S. citizen from Texas and is an Army veteran.

On Wednesday, 15 people died and at least 30 were injured when the suspect drove a pickup truck into revelers gathered at Canal and Bourbon Streets. Afterward, he got out of the car and shot at officers, injuring two, according to the FBI.
Jabbar died in a shootout with police, the FBI said. The bureau said investigators also found a suspected homemade explosive device inside the truck, as well as others in the French Quarter.
The FBI is investigating the incident as an “act of terror” and doesn’t believe Jabbar acted alone. An ISIS flag was found in the truck, the FBI said.
The attack came the same day that the University of Georgia (UGA) was supposed to play against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, a College Football Playoffs quarterfinal game. The game was postponed for 24 hours, officials announced in a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.
