MADISON, Wisc. (WLUK) — By Wisconsin standards, it was a blowout victory for liberal-backed Susan Crawford over the conservative-backed Brad Schmiel in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race.
Wisconsin is used to statewide races not having a declared winner until the early morning hours after Election Day, but this race was called just over an hour after the polls closed, much to the delight of Crawford and her supporters gathered in downtown Madison.
“I’m here tonight, because I’ve spent my life fighting to do what’s right,” Crawford told her supporters in her victory speech at the Park Hotel. “That’s why I got into this race, to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Wisconsinites.”
Crawford’s victory retains a liberal majority on the court. A 4 to 3 edge was gained two years ago after 15 years with a conservative lean.
“My promise to Wisconsin is clear, I will be a fair, impartial and common sense justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” said Crawford.
This race was viewed by many as a test for how people feel about President Donald Trump’s first few months back in office.
A record amount of money was spent for a state judicial race, including more than $20 million from Elon Musk-backed groups.
“As a little girl growing up in Chippewa Falls, I never could have imagined I’d be taking on the richest man in the world for justice in Wisconsin and we won,” said Crawford.
Crawford, a Dane County Circuit Court Judge, will get a 10-year term on the supreme court.
Major issues are expected to be coming up including Act 10, the state law that took away most collective bargaining rights for most public employees, and changes to congressional voting districts, which could play a major role in the narrow majority Republicans hold in the House of Representatives.
