CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) - A substance abuse counselor was arrested for possession of illegal substances following a traffic stop in Grady County.

According to the post, the traffic stop was conducted on Vereen Bell Road.

The sheriff’s office said that during the stop, 48-year-old Jonathen Seth Higginbotham was found in possession of cocaine and attempted to destroy the evidence.

Higginbotham is a substance abuse counselor.

During the stop, the deputy saw signs of possible narcotics involvement.

After getting consent to search the vehicle, the deputy found cocaine hidden in Higginbotham’s sock.

When the deputy tried to get the drugs, Higginbotham began to physically resist, leading to a struggle and the cocaine being ripped from his sock.

A further search of his vehicle led to the discovery of more cocaine.

Higginbotham was arrested and has been charged with:

• Possession of cocaine
• Obstruction of an officer
• Tampering with evidence

He was booked into the Grady County Jail.

“It’s troubling when someone entrusted with helping others overcome addiction is involved in drug-related crimes. We remain committed to keeping Grady County safe and holding everyone accountable.”
