CARMEL, Ind. (TNND) — A powerful tornado swept through Carmel, Indiana, late Wednesday night, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake.

Footage posted on social media captured the large tornado touching down in the city, accompanied by frequent lightning strikes that lit up what appeared to be a residential area. In a video shared on Reddit by user ShroudedGuardian, a man can be heard exclaiming, "Holy --ck!" as the storm rages on.

The storm system, which included violent winds and tornadoes, caused significant damage across the region, flattening homes and demolishing buildings. The city of Carmel issued an urgent warning, advising residents to take immediate shelter: "Carmel - a tornado is on the ground in the area. Take shelter immediately."

The severe weather left behind a trail of destruction, with several injuries reported. Two workers were injured Wednesday when the roof and wall of a Sur La Table distribution center in Brownsburg, Indiana, collapsed, a company spokesperson confirmed. Emergency crews spent hours working to free one of the trapped workers.

In addition, five semitrucks were overturned on Interstate 65 near Lowell, Indiana, according to state police. Schools across at least 10 districts in the state were either canceled or delayed on Thursday. Indianapolis Public Schools announced a remote learning day due to widespread power outages at multiple buildings.

As of Thursday morning, more than half a million people across several states—including Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas—remained without power, according to PowerOutage.us, which tracks outages nationwide.
