WASHINGTON (WJLA) — House Speaker Mike Johnson’s Chief of Staff pleaded not guilty to a DUI charge Thursday morning.

Johnson’s Chief of Staff Jeffrey Hayden Haynes was arrested and taken into custody by U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) after backing his car into a parked Capitol Police vehicle, USCP officials told ABC News in March. The DUI misdemeanor charges came the night after President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress.

Haynes appeared virtually in front of D.C. Superior Court Magistrate Judge Heide Herrmann. He waived further reading of his charges, according to D.C. Court records.

Stuart Sears represented Haynes in the hearing. Sears specializes in White Collar criminal defense and Government investigations as well as Criminal Defense, according to the Schertler Onorato Mead & Sears website.

Haynes was unsteady on his feet, slurring his words, and fell onto the passenger seat of his Tesla after being stopped by a USCP officer. Haynes underwent a field sobriety test and had to be prevented from falling over, according to the affidavit filed at the time of Haynes’ arrest.

Haynes provided a urine sample; but, he dropped it in the toilet. When given another cup to provide a sample, Haynes could no longer urinate before his release, according to the affidavit.

Haynes’ next court date is set for May 16, 2025. Attorney General for the District of Columbia Brian L. Schwalb is prosecuting this case.
