COLQUITT, Ga. (WALB) - A recent decision by the State of Georgia aims to improve public safety in response to the growing frequency of railway traffic.
According to a Facebook post from Colquitt Police Department (CPD), Midsouth Railroad has announced a transition from yield signs to stop signs at certain rail crossings to address concerns about traffic safety.
The change follows a comprehensive assessment of safety conditions, which revealed that the increased number of trains passing through these areas necessitates stricter traffic control measures. It is important to note that railroad crossings equipped with automated rail arms will not be affected by this update.
To ensure a smooth transition and to give motorists time to adjust, the Colquitt Police Department will enforce the new regulations with a 60-day grace period. During this time, officers will exercise discretion when issuing citations for any violations related to the newly installed stop signs.
“Our top priority is the safety of our community,” said a representative from the Colquitt Police Department. “The new stop signs are a proactive step toward preventing accidents at rail crossings, and we appreciate the cooperation of the public as we work to implement these important changes.”
Residents and drivers are encouraged to remain aware of the new stop signs and follow all traffic regulations to ensure everyone’s safety. For more information or to report concerns, please contact the Colquitt Police Department.
