WASHINGTON (TNND) — Anxiety remains after the attack in New Orleans that federal agents say was inspired by terror tactics.

“We do not assess at this point that anyone else is involved in this attack except for Shamsud-din Jabbar," Deputy Assistant FBI Director Christopher Raia said a press briefing Thursday.

The attack where suspect Jabbar used a truck to speed through crowds at the center of New Orleans nightlife is the latest vehicular ramming strike on crowds worldwide. And it comes after repeated warnings from federal officials.

At least five were killed and 200 were injured on Dec. 20 at a German Christmas market. A Saudi Arabian doctor was arrested after driving into pedestrians.

Even before that attack, a federal joint intelligence bulletin from early December warned law enforcement around the country about holiday gatherings being potential targets and to be alert for “vehicle ramming" because of its ability to inflict mass casualties without the required training.

New Orleans police said they had a plan in place for New Year's Eve crowdgoers.

We did indeed have a plan, but the terrorist defeated it," Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said at a press briefing Wednesday.

Security barriers around Bourbon Street were in the process of being replaced when the attack happened.

“So there’s your hole, that’s the breakdown in the security. The police car blocking the street was not enough, they needed to have police cars blocking the entire entrance to that road to include the sidewalks," said retired FBI Special Agent Kenneth Gray who now is a distinguished lecturer in the criminal justice department at the University of New Haven.

A Department of Homeland Security commissioned report from a year ago had warned about the lack of preparedness in the US for soft targets - with the report noting “Attacks on soft targets (STs) and crowded places (CPs) (ST-CPs) represent a significant challenge in the 2023 security environment.”

With several other high-profile events coming up in New Orleans including Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl, the city’s mayor tried to reassure locals and visitors saying the city is ready and built to host big events.
