MONTICELLO, Fla. (WCTV) - The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating after a van carrying nine people crashed outside Monticello on Thursday.
The crash happened just before 6 a.m. on County Road 149 near Dills Rd.
Florida Highway Patrol said in a press release that the van lost control on Boston Highway just north of Dills Road and crashed into an embankment.
As of Thursday afternoon, it was not clear as to why the driver lost control.
The front passenger, a 30-year-old man from Valdosta, died at the scene. Another passenger, a 29-year-old man from Valdosta, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
FHP originally reported to WCTV the person taken to a hospital suffered serious injuries, however, WCTV learned in an update that the person suffered minor injuries related to the crash.
No one else in the van sustained any injuries and no one in the van was wearing a seatbelt, according to FHP.
A total of six adults and three children were in the van at the time of the crash. The three kids ranged in age from four to eight years old.
