Description

COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) -Today, WALB learned that the man involved in a Colquitt County crash that took the lives of a mother and her toddler daughter has been arrested and charged.

WALB previously reported that on Sunday, Oct. 13, George Montgomery, the driver of a Ford-F150, failed to yield at the intersection of GA-111 and Bob Taylor Road. He crashed into a vehicle filled with members of Phillips family. They were on their way to take family photos.

After the impact, both vehicles became engulfed in flames, according to GSP.

Jessica Phillips, 34, and Ellie Phillips, 3, died as a result the crash.

Bystanders were able to help Eric Phillips and the three boys out of the car, but Jessica and Ellie were trapped inside. Eric suffered broken ribs and third-degree burns.

Law enforcement was able to determined that Montgomery was at fault. He is now facing the following charges:

  • Homicide by Vehicle 1st Degree (2 counts)
  • Serious Injury by Vehicle
  • Hit and Run Resulting in Serious Injury
  • Reckless Driving
  • Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign

Montgomery was booked into the Colquitt County Jail on Wednesday, Dec. 11 after being arrested in Gwinnett County and transferred.

Diana Fletcher, a family friend, tells WALB that Eric is progressing physically but is still unable to work full time. She asks for continued prayers.

We are all processing... Still ready for justice to be served...Would appreciate continued prayers for him and the boys during the holidays for sure!

WALB is working to find out the date of Montgomery’s next court appearance, but we do know that he was originally denied bond and remains in custody.
