WASHINGTON (TNND) — Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the certification of President-elect Donald Trump’s election win, and her loss.
The scene at the Capitol on January 6th, 2025 was much different than the one four years ago.
An angry mob stormed the Capitol after a speech from then-President Trump. Four years later, President-elect Trump has promised pardons for his supporters who were involved in the riot.
“I’m going to look at everything, we’re going to look at cases. I’m going to be acting very quickly...day one," Trump said in December on NBC's Meet the Press.
More than 1,500 people have been charged so far in connection with the Capitol attack, with almost 400 charged with felony assault on police or others.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., has called for a blanket pardon. Other members aren’t so sure.
That's ultimately going to be a decision that President Trump is going to have to make and you know what I'm focused on is the future and uh not looking in the in the rearview mirror," Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said over the weekend.
The outgoing administration has preached a return to the peaceful transition of power, with Harris releasing a video ahead of the election certification.
“As much as any other principle, it is what distinguishes our system of government from monarchy or tyranny," she said about the transition.
President Joe Biden in an op-ed about January 6th also committed to restoring tradition, while also learning from the past.
He wrote in part, “An unrelenting effort has been underway to rewrite — even erase — the history of that day. We cannot allow the truth to be lost.”
Democrats are mostly against the idea of pardons, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., denouncing the idea of pardons on the Senate floor ahead of the election certification.
“Pardoning the criminals who assaulted police officers and tried to halt the democratic process would be a dangerous endorsement of political violence," he said.
