VILNIUS, Lithuania (TNND) — The body of the fourth U.S. soldier that went missing during a training mission outside Lithuania's capital last week was recovered Tuesday, according to Army officials.

The identity of the soldier is being withheld pending confirmation of notification of next of kin.

"This past week has been devastating. Today our hearts bear the weight of an unbearable pain with the loss of our final Dogface Soldier," said Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, 3rd Inf. Div. commanding general. “Though we have received some closure, the world is darker without them.”

Officials said the soldier was found after a search by hundreds of rescue workers from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Lithuanian Armed Forces, Polish Armed Forces, Estonian Armed Forces, and many other elements of the Lithuanian government and civilian agencies.

"We are deeply grateful to our brave servicemembers who enabled this difficult recovery and to our Lithuanian hosts who labored alongside them," Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said. "The recovery was conducted with urgency, resolve and deep respect for the fallen. We will never forget these soldiers — and our prayers are with their families."

Three of the four missing U.S. soldiers were recovered Monday after the 63-ton vehicle they were in was removed from a peat bog.

The M88 Hercules armored vehicle the soldiers were traveling in was found on Wednesday submerged in about 15 feet of water and "encased" in about 2 feet of mud, U.S. Army Europe and Africa said.

U.S. Navy divers were able to reach the vehicle on Sunday and remove it from the peat bog early Monday morning after a six-day-long effort, the Army said.

A release stated the soldiers were from Fort Stewart, Georgia, and deployed to Lithuania in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

The U.S. Army and Lithuanian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
