Description

PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) -After his presidency, Jimmy Carter became involved with dozens of causes in an effort to improve the world.

One of his various missions was preserving election integrity in other countries through the Carter Center’s Democracy Program.

The former associate director of The Carter Center’s Democracy Program, Avery Davis-Roberts, says the program supports international elections by promoting political participation and election integrity.

“We are really there to assess how the process is unfolding. We have long term observers who we send out all over the country to assess that process. On election day, we have a delegation of observers who go into polling places and answer questions on a checklist to really understand if the process is free and fair. Is this an open, democratic, and competitive election,” Davis-Roberts explains.

From there, The Carter Center will write a report and provide recommendations on how elections can be improved. The Democracy Program was born out of Jimmy Carter’s desire to ensure that disadvantaged groups received fair governance.

Davis-Roberts says, “[Jimmy Carter] was a visionary in doing this work internationally in many countries around the world. When The Carter Center started working more in the United States on election support [The Carter Center] saw that there was a need here as well.”

Davis-Roberts says the Democracy Program shaped her life in many ways, and she hopes the work Jimmy Carter started will live on through the interns and staff.

“The time and attention that President and Mrs. Carter gave to the interns just has impacted so many individual people in the early days of their career. I encourage everyone to apply for the internship because it’s such a great opportunity.”

Davis-Roberts began her 20-year career with The Carter Center as an intern. If you would like to be an intern with The Carter Center, click here.
