Description

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Christmas is over and New Year’s Eve is right around the corner.

Fireworks will soon be ringing out and lighting up the sky as people celebrate the start of 2025.

While the problem had improved slightly, thousands of firework-related injuries still happen every year.

Each state has different rules and regulations for firework usage to keep people safe.

Under Georgia law lighting fireworks is restricted to those 18 and older. It is also illegal to sell fireworks to someone under the age of 18-years-old.

For those partying with alcohol or similar substances, it is illegal to light fireworks under the influence.

It’s also illegal to light fireworks indoors or within the right of way of a public road, street, highway, or railroad. You also can’t like fireworks in any park, historic site, or recreational area managed by the state or a local municipality.

Depending on the circumstance, penalties for breaking firework laws range from misdemeanors to felony charges that include a $10,000 fine and a prison sentence if convicted.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind if you’re planning to ring in the new year with fireworks:

  • Always read and follow label directions
  • Only light one firework at a time
  • Never reignite malfunctioning fire
  • Never throw fireworks at another person
