NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Covenant School parents whose children survived the 2023 school shooting react to the news coming out of Metro Police's concluded investigation report.
They told FOX 17 News reading it makes them relive the nightmare of what happened, but they feel vindicated because they said it proves the writings should not have been released.
Mary Joyce's daughter told her mom she saw her 9-year-old friends' lifeless bodies on the ground at Covenant School a little over two years ago.
"The horrific events that she saw, heard, smelled still haunt her today," said Joyce.
Metro Police said three children (Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, William Kinney) and three staff members (Katherine Koonce, Mike Hill, Cynthia Peak )died at the hands of a 28-year-old shooter Audrey Hale who was formerly a covenant school student.
"She was sick and we will never feel full closure from what happened that day," said Joyce about Hale.
Wednesday, Metro Police released their 48-page police investigation report into what happened and more about the shooter. It specified there was no manifesto by saying "Hale never left behind a single document explaining why she committed the attack, why she specifically targeted The Covenant, and what she hoped to gain, if anything, with the attack." Instead, her motivations were scattered across those many notebooks and other writings. It included how she looked at the Columbine shooting as inspiration and notoriety as a motive after dealing with low self-esteem and mental issues.
"This report summarizes the reality we've been living with that this was truly a senseless crime committed by a deranged, selfish, evil individual who relished the killing of innocent children," said Stefan Banks.
He said he was one of nearly 100 March 27th families who fought and won in court against releasing the shooter's writings and other materials. This was after organizations pushed for them to be released.
"The conclusion of this investigation establishes beyond a doubt that our legal battle against the public releases of the shooter's evil material is just appropriate and should silence any critics of our efforts," he said.
After the recent Antioch High School shooting-calls for better safety measures surfaced.
Covenant parents said one of those measures is to do everything possible to make sure copycats don't emerge.
Joyce said something needs to change.
"It's sad that our children know where to hide in their classrooms," she said.
Security expert Brink Fidler said this tragedy was unpredictable, but we could do our best to make sure we take all measures possible to try to prevent them.
