Description
LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) - Lee County Animal Control announced on Tuesday, May 19, that a person has been cited in an animal “neglect case” that ended with 15 animals being rescued.
According to animal control, a dog, two pigeons and 12 chickens were found in “unsanitary conditions without proper shelter or potable water.”

Two dead chickens were also found, one of which was discarded on public property.
In a Facebook post, animal control thanked two organizations who are giving the animals a second chance.
“In cases like this, we are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with some really awesome local organizations that are better equipped to house animals that probably wouldn’t fare well in a dog kennel at the shelter.”
The two pigeons are now at Chehaw Park and Zoo, and after quarantine and vet care, will become “Education Ambassadors.”
The dog, a Jack Russel named “Bud” and the chickens are now safe at Covey Hill Animal Rescue.
The former owner was cited with:
- 16 counts of Animal Cruelty & Neglect
- 1 count of Abandonment of Dead Animals Upon Public Property
According to animal control, each count could carry a $1,000 fine and/or 60 days in jail.
If you are interested in adopting “Bud,” the rescue is taking applications according to animal control.
