WILLACOOCHEE, Ga. (WALB) — Social media posts are sparking concern and questions across Atkinson County after discussion surrounding the possible closure of Willacoochee Elementary School.

A post circulating online claims the topic was discussed during a recent Board of Education meeting, including the possibility of moving approximately 150 Willacoochee Elementary students to Pearson Elementary School.

The post also raised questions about the future use of the Willacoochee Elementary campus, including discussion of potentially converting the property into an agricultural or show facility.

Residents quickly took to social media sharing concerns about overcrowding, transparency, funding, and the future of the community.

One resident wrote:

“If the county is considering turning the campus into an agricultural/show facility, wouldn’t that require money for renovations, upkeep, utilities, and maintenance? If the goal is cost reduction, the public deserves to know where the actual savings would come from.”

Another resident questioned why the discussion is happening at all, saying:

“I don’t have any kids in WES. Yet still, I just wonder why it’s a discussion to begin with.”

Others expressed concern about space at Pearson Elementary and the impact the move could have on students and the community.

One comment read:

“Pearson Elementary is already jammed packed and can’t handle more students and faculty. Who wants massive class sizes? Nobody.”

Another resident wrote:

“I think this is a huge mistake and it will completely destroy Willacoochee.”

Some residents also questioned whether redistricting school lines could be considered instead of closing a school.

Atkinson County School System released the following statement below.

During the called board meeting on May 18, 2026, the Board of Education discussed a proposal regarding the possible relocation of WES to PES based on historical enrollment trends. At this time, no decision has been made, as the information was presented for consideration only.

The proposal was introduced as a potential option for FY27 or FY28. After discussion, the board chose to continue gathering information and revisit the proposal for FY28.

Over the past several years, the school system has carefully monitored enrollment patterns and consistently shared updates with the board. In the last two years, enrollment at PES and WES has declined by 127 students, and current data suggests that any potential transition would have minimal impact.

Atkinson County School System remains committed to transparency and thoughtful planning. Processes like this take time and involve multiple steps to ensure all perspectives are considered.

The first step was presenting the proposal to the board, followed by communication with administrators, faculty, and staff. The board also discussed the possibility of hosting a public forum in the coming months to gather community input and answer questions.

We value the support and involvement of our families, staff, and community members. By working together, we can continue building a strong future for every child in Atkinson County.
