VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - Five people are displaced and one person is in the hospital after a Thursday morning fire.

A post by the Valdosta Fire Department said the fire happened at a residence in the 1500 block of Shealy Place.

According to Valdosta Fire Chief Brian Boutwell, the call about the fire was received at around 9:12 a.m. He said the first crews arrived within three minutes of the call. Upon arrival, crews saw smoke coming out from under the overhangs of the roof.

A total of 19 units went to the scene of the fire, according to Boutwell.

Chief Boutwell said one person was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for smoke inhalation, and five people were displaced. The American Red Cross is helping those who were displaced.

The cause, according to Chief Boutwell, was “a candle being placed too close to combustibles.”
