HAHIRA, Ga. (WALB) - The members of a Hahira Elementary School club donated dozens of blankets on Friday, Dec. 12, to South Georgia Medical Center Health’s (SGMC) Pearlman Cancer Center, the school announced.

The club – “Girls to Vikettes” – reportedly chose to organize a blanket drive for local cancer patients after recognizing that nearly everyone has been affected by cancer in some way.

Edna Cooper, the paraeducator who leads the club, said that the girls hoped to support the patients by “literally wrapping them in love” with the blankets.

In total, Girls to Vikettes gathered 80 blankets to give to SGMC. Each blanket was delivered with a personal letter written by Vikettes members.

Cooper said the most rewarding part of leading the club isn’t seeing the number of blankets they donated, but seeing the young ladies grow in confidence.

“Their boldness and desire to succeed is inspiring,” she shared. “They absolutely took this project on 100 percent.”

When the girls visited SGMC to deliver the blankets, they met with nurses and staff to learn more about healthcare and the work that goes on at a center like Pearlman, the school said.
