Description
ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - Thomas County Central will face Gainesville in tonight’s GHSA State Footbal 5A Championship game as the team seeks its second title in three years under Coach Rogers.
The matchup features TCC’s high-powered offense, which averages 53 points per game and has scored 70 points in some contests this season, against a Gainesville team that has overcome adversity to reach the title game.
TCC’s offensive weapons
TCC’s offense centers around running back Christian Lawrence, known as “Deuce,” who is expected to receive 25 to 30 touches in the championship game. Lawrence is described as an explosive back with a low center of gravity who can break away for long runs when he reaches open space.
The team also features quarterback Jalen Johnson, who won a championship as a sophomore and now brings more experience to the position. Other key players include Rodney Dunbar, receiver Jabari Watkins and defensive player Cam Brooks.
Gainesville’s challenging path
The Red Elephants have faced significant challenges reaching the championship game, including a scuffle with Brunswick in Round 2 that led to lawsuits, court proceedings and suspensions. Despite these obstacles, Gainesville has strung together wins to advance to the title game.
TCC has been tested in its last two playoff games but has responded with strong performances from both its offense and defense.
Stay tuned tonight at 11 p.m. for updates and highlights.
