ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) — Worth County defeated defending state champion Toombs County to win the Class A Division I state championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, completing the program’s first undefeated season.
The Rams trailed 13-10 at halftime before rallying in the second half to secure their first state title since 1990 and first appearance in the championship game in more than 30 years.
Second-half comeback seals victory
Worth County’s defense dominated the second half after allowing 13 first-half points. The team forced one turnover and prevented Toombs County from scoring in the final two quarters.
Jayden Farley scored the first touchdown of the second half for Worth County. The Rams’ defense improved their tackling and limited big plays by the defending champions.
“It’s amazing. I can’t put in the words. I’ve got unbelievable players. I’ve got an unbelievable fan base,” Worth County Head Coach Jeff Hammond said. “All I ever want to do is to represent them and make them proud. And this shows we can.”
Four-year journey complete
Hammond said the senior class was his first group when he arrived at Worth County four years ago. He told them in their first meeting they would make the playoffs, win the region and win a state championship. “It took us four years and they made it happen.”
Worth County finished the season undefeated and will move to a new region next season. The victory marks the program’s return to prominence after decades without a state championship appearance.
