ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - One of the victims in Saturday morning’s ambulance rollover in Albany is speaking out.
Rena Brown was in a Ford pickup truck when she says the Dougherty County EMA ambulance t-boned her.
“My oldest was in the passenger seat, and then my little one was sitting behind her, and that’s where the ambulance hit,” she said.
The crash led to eight people being injured, including a newborn infant, who was in the back of the ambulance at the time.
There were three people in the Ford pickup truck, five people in the ambulance and one person in a third vehicle that was hit, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). That totals to nine individuals, but only eight were reported injured, GSP said.
Dougherty County EMS told WALB that the crash happened just after 7 a.m. at the corner of Pine Avenue and Monroe Street.
GSP is investigating the crash that Brown said “happened too fast” for her to react.
Brown says she and her daughters were on the way to a dance competition in Tifton when the accident happened.
She says her youngest daughter is currently having trouble walking and pain in her body.
Brown recalled the moment she noticed the driver of the third vehicle was pinned.
“I know she was crushed in, and I don’t remember them getting the jaws of life, but somehow I don’t know how they got that door off because her little car was crushed in,” she said. “She was screaming, screaming, and I was trying to make sure my kids were good. You know, I couldn’t go over there as bad as I wanted to, and then everybody was saying that we were out.”
Brown says that despite not being able to help the other injured victims in the crash herself, she is grateful that no one lost their lives.
“It could have been so much worse. That baby and that mama could have died, too. They could have died. We could have,” she said.
WALB has reached out to GSP for the cause of the crash.
