Description

MEIGS, Ga. (WCTV) - The City of Meigs was awarded $1 million as part of Georgia’s Community Development Block Grants.

As one of 36 local communities awarded funds, Meigs plans to use the funding for water system improvements on Church, Railroad, Mil, Cabin, Vine, Palmer, Bay, Marshall, Depot and Crawford Streets.

City officials said they also want to put in a new water tower.

According to the proposal sent to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, this project will benefit 283 people, most of whom are low to moderate-income.

More news out of South Georgia:

The total project will cost $1,062,898, with $62,893 in match, leverage and in-kind services.

City Manager Rhonda Brown said these funds will do a lot of good in Meigs.

“The citizens won’t have to deal with no more water lines breaking or sewer backing up and spilling over. It’s going to help tremendously, something that is well needed in this community,” Brown said.

Improvements are expected to get started by the end of the year.

Georgia’s CDBG program is available to non-entitlement local governments, specifically rural communities. Communities must apply each year, and after a thorough evaluation process, applications are scored, rated, and ranked. Grants are awarded based on overall merit.
