Description
CLINCH COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) - A cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool has compromised some users’ data in the Clinch County School District and Lanier County School District, according to letters from the district superintendents.
Parents, educators and students in K-12 schools nationwide use PowerSchool to organize student information and communicate with families. The software company announced the data breach nearly a week ago.
In Clinch and Lanier County, the data taken during the cyberattack involves “parents student and educator contact information with data elements such as name and address,” the superintendents wrote in separate letters posted on Facebook.
PowerSchool reported some customers’ personal data including social security numbers and medical information were breached during the attack.
According to the Lanier County School District, PowerSchool is “actively investigating whether PII belonging to our students, staff or families was affected and is working urgently to provide additional details.”
Right now, the software company said the platform is safe to use and the cyberattack has been “contained.”
Students, faculty and staff in the Clinch County School District utilize Google single sign-in to log onto PowerSchool, and those passwords were not breached in the cyberattack, according to the school district.
However, the district is encouraging parents to change their passwords associated with their parental accounts.
“The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority,” Superintendent James wrote in a statement. “PowerSchool has assured us they are taking steps to address the situation and we will provide additional information and resources, including identity protection services if applicable.”
WCTV has contacted other school districts in our viewing area to determine if they experienced impacts from the cyberattack.
