ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Cobb County girl is in critical condition after she “used a firearm to commit self-harm” at a middle school in Mableton, according to a statement from a district spokesperson.

According to Cobb County school police, the incident happened around 2:45 p.m. at Lindley Middle School. Police said first responders were with the student within 90 seconds.

The school was temporarily placed on lockdown, but “has been thoroughly cleared and deemed secure,” according to police.

“All the other kids that are in the school are safe,” said Sgt. John McCraw with the Cobb County School District Police Department. “We got them out of the school in a timely manner and got them reunited with their parents.”

Parents were reunited with their children at Leland United Methodist Church at 81 Veterans Memorial Highway.

“Our response was overwhelming and quick,” McCraw said. “I want to say the first unit was on the scene within about 60 to 90 seconds. There is an officer, actually quicker than that, there is an officer assigned to the school, so she was in the school when the incident happened, so it was a matter of locating what area of the school.”

“The code red was lifted once police confirmed there was no specific threat to fellow students,” police said in a statement shortly after the shooting. “The student is in critical condition, surrounded by their family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with them.”

The girl was life-flighted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Police are currently unaware of how the gun got into the school, but say there are no weapons detectors at Cobb middle schools.

“It’s still very early,” McCraw said. “We don’t have any idea where the weapon was at, how she got it in, or anything like that.”

McCraw said other students are being interviewed to find out more.
