ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - As the beginning of the school year is right around the corner, many families are stocking up on supplies to ensure their children have everything they need to succeed. Unfortunately, not every child gets that same opportunity.

Two local organizations are teaming up to change that.

The Junior League of Albany is teaming up with the Dougherty County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to collect school supplies for foster children in need.

“You get to see that excitement in their eyes. You get to see the total pleasure of being able to have new things to start the school year, especially with fun backpacks. Kids love fun backpacks,” said Charlene Maldonado, Executive Director of Dougherty County CASA and Junior League member.

There are over 230 foster children in Dougherty County alone. Giving these kids the tools they need to start the school year off strong can make all of the difference in their academic success.

While the government covers basic costs for foster care, foster parents often spend money out of their own pocket to provide a sense of normalcy for their foster children. Local foster parents said this collaboration will help them just as much as the children.

“While there are per diems for the children that are in our care, a lot of things that are extra, a lot of things are unexpected expenses that are often a burden on foster families. There’s a lot that comes out of my pocket. Organizations that are willing to put their efforts towards helping foster families are really important,” said one local foster mom, Kerrie Davis.
