WASHINGTON (7News) — An amendment was approved by the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday to rename one of the Kennedy Center's theaters the "First Lady Melania Trump Opera House."

Subcommittee Chairman Mike Simpson put forward the adopted amendment for the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, saying its advancement "is the next step toward establishing American energy dominance, reversing harmful Biden-era regulations, and ensuring access to, and protection of, our public lands for recreation and hunting."

The proposal to change the name of the theater passed by a vote of 33- 25 and included other provisions on military readiness, timber production and clarification on the bill's language.

The push to rename the center comes months after President Donald Trump appointed himself as chairman of the Board of Trustees after arguing that the shows at the center are too "woke."

"We took over the Kennedy Center," Trump explained. "We didn't like what they were showing and various other things."

A statement from the center said the Kennedy Center's Board had always been bipartisan since its inception.

"Per the Center’s governance established by Congress in 1958, the chair of the board of trustees is appointed by the Center’s board members," the statement read. "There is nothing in the Center’s statute that would prevent a new administration from replacing board members; however, this would be the first time such action has been taken with the Kennedy Center’s board."
