SOPERTON, Ga. (WGXA) — Two people were arrested after a 15-year-old was killed and a 17-year-old was critically injured in a deadly shooting in Soperton on Sunday.

According to the Soperton Police Department, the shooting happened around 3:40 p.m. in the 100 block of New Street.

Officers arrived to find a 15-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds who died from his injuries at the scene. A 17-year-old male was also shot multiple times and was taken to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia in "critical condition."

Soperton Police Department, Treutlen Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) responded to the scene to learn what led up to the shooting and search for those involved.

As a result of the incident, Treutlen County Schools announced their condolences for the loss of one of its students on Facebook on Sunday:

"Our school community is deeply saddened to share that one of our students tragically lost their life during an event that occurred this afternoon. Another student was also injured and is currently receiving medical care. Our hearts are with both families, their loved ones, and all our students and staff affected by this tragedy."

The school also announced it would have students go through weapons detectors on Monday morning and remain on a "soft lockdown" throughout the day as a "safety measure."

Law enforcement arrested 20-year-old Emily Ford of Dublin and 19-year-old Allen Knight of Soperton on Monday. The two were charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, as well as two counts of party to a crime.

"Investigations are dynamic with a lot of moving parts, said Soperton Chief of Police Brian Scott in a release. "The investigating agencies, as well as the partner law enforcement agencies who assital have a unified goal: Find the facts and seek justice for the victims. This is a very tragic incident resulting from a senseless act of violence."

Treutlen County Coroner Greg Higgs confirmed on Monday afternoon that the 17-year-old has since been released from the hospital in stable condition, and the 15-year-old's body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler for autopsy.
