WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump has taken significant steps to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the federal government during his first 100 days in office, fulfilling a key campaign promise.
On his first day, Trump signed an executive order rescinding 78 Biden-era executive actions, effectively eliminating all DEI programs from the federal government.
The following day, Trump directed the Office of Personnel Management to notify agency and department heads to close all DEI offices.
He also signed another executive order ending DEI hiring at the Federal Aviation Administration.
"You only want the best and the brightest because that’s what takes you home to your family," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
Trump issued additional executive orders aimed at ending alleged sex and race-based discrimination through DEI programs in workplaces and schools. In February, the Department of Education warned state education boards to remove DEI policies or risk losing federal funding.
"They’re allowing people into school who can’t do math, and yet kids who worked really hard and are No. 1 in their class at a high school someplace in Mississippi or New Jersey, they can’t get into the best schools," Trump said.
Before Trump took office, the FBI independently closed its DEI office.
The Department of Defense has created a task force to assess the progress of eliminating DEI in the armed forces.
"Secretary Hegseth has completely wiped out DEI from the Pentagon as well, and so he’s going to remain focused on standing up for our war fighters," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
The private sector appears to be following the government's lead. Since Trump's election, companies such as Meta, McDonald's, Ford, John Deere, Lowe's, and Toyota have canceled their DEI programs.
Opponents of the president's DEI policies are challenging the administration through the legal system. Nineteen states have filed a lawsuit against the White House over orders ending DEI in public schools.
