Description
WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump is threatening one of the biggest phone manufacturers with a 25% tariff if their products are not produced in the United States.
"I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else," Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday morning.
"If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S." he continued.
If Trump delivers on his threat, it could dramatically increase the price of iPhones and potentially hurt Apple's profits.
During his trip to the Middle East last week, the president said he was displeased with Cook over the plans to manufacture iPhones at a newly built plant in India.
“I had a little problem with Tim Cook,” Trump said in Qatar. “I said to him, ‘Tim, you’re my friend. I treated you very good. You’re coming in with $500 billion.’ But now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want you building in India.’”
Apple has yet to respond to the threat.
