WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to European trade partners, threatening a 50% tariff on goods from the European Union unless a deal is reached by June 1, 2025.

Trump emphasized that no tariff would be imposed if products were manufactured in the United States.

I just said it’s time that we play the game the way I know how to play the game. They’ve taken advantage of other people representing this country and they’re not going to do that any longer," Trump told reporters Friday.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he hoped the message would "light a fire" under the EU and motivate them to make a deal.

"I believe the President believes the EU proposals have not been of the same quality we’ve seen from our other important trade partners," Bessent told Fox News.

The President also targeted Apple, demanding that the tech giant increase domestic production of iPhones.

Trump warned Apple CEO Tim Cook that failure to comply would result in a 25% tariff on the company. Analysts suggest that moving production to the U.S. could increase iPhone prices to $3,500.

"Those are gonna cost more. It's gonna have a ripple effect across the economy, and I don't think that's the best way for us to address the concerns around our trade imbalance," Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said.

Apple has pledged to invest $500 billion in the U.S. over the next four years, but its manufacturer also announced a recent $1.5 billion investment to expand manufacturing in India. The tech powerhouse has moved some operations away from China toward other countries with friendlier trade deals.

The EU currently faces a 25% tariff on steel, aluminum, and cars, with a 10% reciprocal tariff on other goods. A 90-day pause on a higher 20% tariff for the EU is set to expire in July.
