CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (TNND) — Remnants from Tropical Storm Chantal dumped up to 10 inches of rain in central North Carolina on Sunday night into Monday morning, causing significant flooding, deaths and water rescues.
It was the third named storm of the Hurricane Season and the first system to make landfall along the continental United States this season.
In Chapel Hill, just outside of Durham, roads became swamped with feet of water, trapping vehicles in the deluge. Numerous water rescues occurred, and power was knocked out in isolated areas.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed an 83-year-old woman in Chapel Hill died after she drove her vehicle into floodwater on Sunday night.
Two more people were found dead, a 58-year-old Person County woman and a man in Mebane, in vehicles while trying to travel during or after the storm, according to officials.
Two canoers, one of whom was found Monday, also went missing on Jordan Lake during the storm, the Chatham County Sheriff's Office told multiple media outlets.
The Chapel Hill Fire Department and neighboring agencies completed more than 50 water rescues, many of them in areas where floodwaters entered or threatened to enter apartments, officials said. More than 60 people were displaced. After helping with rescues in Chapel Hill, the Durham Fire Department said in a social media post that its crews performed more than 80 more rescues in the Old Farm area.
The storm weakened to a depression after making landfall near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, Sunday afternoon and moved northeast over the Chesapeake Bay toward Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, where more flood watches were posted.
