Daughter testifies about couple’s relationship

After the defense delivered opening statements on Tuesday, March 3, prosecutors called Robert Guzman’s daughter, Kristina Yeater, to the stand. Yeater told the jury she frequently went shooting with the couple and that she lived with them in Leesburg when she was 16 years old.

Yeater testified the two would argue at times, recalling one instance when Sherry Guzman allegedly used a slur toward Robert Guzman. On cross-examination, however, Yeater admitted she was not certain whether she had mentioned that detail to investigators.

Former Lee County Deputy Sheriff Zachary Harris, who responded to the Guzman residence the night of the shooting, also testified. Harris said backseat footage from his patrol unit captured Guzman’s behavior while she was in custody.

Harris testified that when alone in the vehicle, Guzman could be seen talking to herself and praying. He said her demeanor shifted when deputies returned to the car.

During cross-examination, Harris acknowledged the footage showed Guzman praying when officers were not present.

“I assume that’s what she was doing. That’s what it sounded like,” Harris said.

911 call, body camera footage played in court

The 911 call Guzman made the night of the shooting was also played in court, along with body camera footage from responding officers. In both recordings, Guzman can be heard stating that she meant to shoot herself.

The central question in the case is whether Guzman intentionally shot her husband. Expert testimony from Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigators regarding crime scene evidence is expected to continue in the proceedings.
