ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the man accused of killing a Gwinnett County police officer and injuring another in February.

Kevin Andrews faces one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement and one count of receipt, possession or transfer of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Gwinnett County Chief Assistant District Attorney John Melvin announced the punishment sought in court on Tuesday, during which Andrews’ case was moved to the county’s superior court from a lower one.

On Feb. 1, Gwinnett County police officers Pradeep Tamang and David Reed were called to a Holiday Inn off E. Park Place Boulevard to investigate a fraud case. When they tried to take the suspect, later identified as Andrews, into custody for an outstanding arrest warrant out of DeKalb County, he allegedly opened fire and hit both officers.

Tamang died, while Reed was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. The officers fired back, also injuring Andrews.

Tamang’s family and friends remember the 25-year-old as a caring man who loved his job.

“He would come home from work and immediately tell me about his day — what he experienced, what he learned and the people he helped,” his fiancée said during Tamang’s memorial service at a Lawrenceville church. “... I hope his legacy lives on, continuing to inspire and give courage to everyone, especially law enforcement officers.”
